4 Good Reasons to Get Reading
August 9, 2015When it’s summer and holiday time one of the things that many people enjoy is a good read. Of course lots of people read every day, whether they are on holiday or not but others find it’s when they are away from work that they can rally enjoy losing themselves in a good book.
As someone involved in education I think it’s impossible to overestimate the advantages of reading not only for children but for adults as well.
So what are the advantages
- Reading can help you to sleep. Regular routines are important in ensuring a good nights sleep (http://www.helpguide.org/articles/sleep/how-to-sleep-better.htm studies have shown that using screens at bedtime that are back lit are not as good as traditional books for inducing sleep http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/technology/2010/04/ipad-kindle-ebook-sleep.html and games which cause the brain to be stimulated are likely to hinder rather than help sleep (http://healthland.time.com/2011/06/27/tv-video-games-at-night-may-cause-sleep-problems-in-kids/
- Regular reading slows down age related decline in memory http://www.alzheimers.org.uk/site/scripts/news_article.php?newsID=1663
- Reading can also help you relax and so can be used to combat stress (http://www.takingcharge.csh.umn.edu/tips-change/reading-stress-relief) perhaps that’s why we all love a good read on holiday
- Reading as an adult will encourage children to read and for their development this is definitely good as it is the single most important thing parents can do to help a child’s education
So keep reading and encourage your children to do the same. In the words of Jim Rohn (entrepreneur and personal development coach)
“The only thing worse than not reading a book in the last ninety days is not reading a book in the last ninety days and thinking that it doesn’t matter.”
